In last decades of II century AC there is an explotion of construction of Roman villas, not only in Rome but also in Sabina, an important Roman province especially for  agricolture and livestock, which had capital of Forum Novum (current Vescovio).
Even Cottanello, part of this district, had a residence romana, the villa located in Collesecco. Among finds  a fragment edge of dolio embodying the stamp of M. Cottae came to light. It's supposed that the villa belonged to family of AURELIA COTTAE, family from which named Cottanello same.
Towards late 60 during some agricultural jobs,  the considerable housing complex  of villa, whom still not knows real extension since dug partially,  came highlighted. The excavations were carried out by volunteers of the pro-loco then with the supervision of the Archaeological Superintendence of Rome.
Being totally data stratigraphic never received, there enable correct comprehension all structures visible and it's to be noteworthy that excavations have certainly demolished some structures order of emphasizing the main housing phase or the original planimetric schema.
Used construction techniques  note us that the villa had more functional purpose than aesthetic, the various structures have all  different vestments and the trend toward walls and stones of abundant dimensions, using mainly local stone.
Complex connoted by an atrium Tuscanic (19) and equipped a plant spa (25-26-27-30) occupying the southern side. Today you enter the villa from two entrances to the south east and south west .
Along side north there is peristyle (10) and summer triclinium  (12) which communicates with a xystus porticos along left side (21) and with tablinum (17) that presents four cubicula (13-16) willing symmetrically on two long sides from which you accesses a compluviate atrium .
The access is through two entrances. The one where even today you enter, place in the south-east, skirts a depression which was caused by a failure to detect the presence of a cryptoporticus. We find then two rooms, a Swimming environment and some  habitation and representation compartments. On the side of a large room, you have four rooms: this block bordered by another corridor that connects atrium with a great environment of uncertain destination. Interesting, finally, the south side where there are four bedrooms, three fully preserved, and the most eastern retains three steps to the floor.
Only partially preserved plaster that allow us nevertheless understand liveliness whereby were decorated walls but true beauty of our villa is the excellent status of preservation of splendid thresholds of Cottanello marble  and masonry columns .
These agricultural villas  united together profit and beneficent pleasure their owners. Symbol of those pleasant idleness is extension and importance the vast spa zone had in architectural context of the villa. Calidarium, Tiepidarium in magnificent mosaics testify 'voluptas' pregnant in this wonderful place.
The complex of Villa Cottat today yuo admire not been constructed in unique solution, but in three different phases; first one goes from III to I century BC, the second from the first century BC to II AC, and third phase that goes from II AC until abandonment.
It was in second phase that building came enlarged with addition of peristyle and spa; also the villa came repaved  with a splendid musiva decoration .
Such structures pavements fall in typologies of mosaics white and black tesserae with some inlays tesserae policrome; motives are geometric but with vegetal elements or depicting couple of gallinaceous decorating either thresholds.
In 1973 and 1988 there were performed two restorations unfortunately little documented; floors were dissected in panels, taken away, and placed again integrated with cement and malta and finally protected metallic canopies .
